The Tour De Yorkshire is coming to Penistone, and the town’s preparations are well under way.
To mark the Tour’s 30 day countdown, Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team abseiled down St John’s Baptist Church on Saturday 1st April. There, the team helped to attach a large ‘Tour Leaders’ t-shirt banner to the 80ft tall bell tower.

As part of the launch party the town’s Mayor, Paul Hand-Davis and Deputy Mayor, Andrew Millner took part in a bike ride along with a team of young cycling enthusiasts from St John’s Primary School. The children joined in the fun by cycling up Church street as the town launched a month of events in the lead up to the Tour.
On April 30th, Penistone will be the last town the route goes through, before finishing at Fox Valley
Shopping centre, Stocksbridge.

Cycling Sculpture
A steel sculpture by local artist Suze Crawshaw was also affixed to the ‘Penistone One’ building at St Mary’s Street roundabout earlier today.
Crawshaw previously made a sculpture for the Tour De France which resides in Leeds. Her work was done at no charge, as her personal contribution towards Penistone’s Tour de Yorkshire celebrations.
Dransfield Properties financed the installation of the artwork on the clock tower of their building, which will remain a permanent feature after the race.

Community Spirit
Members of the community are helping to decorate the Tour’s route through Penistone. Yorkshire flags, banners, bunting and yellow bicycles are already being put up around the town to get people into the festival spirit.
Penistone Council are also holding a ‘Best Dressed House Competition’. The best house exterior along the Tour’s route will win an overnight stay at Staindrop Lodge in Sheffield. Email tdy@penistoneshow.com to enter.
Paul Hand-Davis, the town’s mayor said “It’s incredible how the local community is so keen and proud to show off Penistone and the surrounding area at its best.
“Plans are already under way to have music playing throughout Penistone on tour day with family activities being created in different parts of the town.
We are immensely proud that the tour is coming through Penistone.”
On the Race Day of Sunday 30th April, Penistone Town centre will host a Tour de Yorkshire festival with a variety of free activities and entertainment from 11am until 8pm.
Five stages will be set up across the town, with Thurlstone Brass Band outside the Spar, and local rock bands outside the Spread Eagle and the Bridge Inn.
Fairground rides and stalls will reside in The Paramount car park, while Penistone’s Royal British Legion will host a Pig roast in the garden which will overlook the race.
The race itself will pass through the town at around 4pm.
